Setting Goals Our Daughter Jill Shares Ideas

Developing the Next Generation of Rainmakers Setting Goals: Our Daughter Jill Shares Ideas I’ve coached several lawyers this year whose focus in our coaching sessions is broader than just client development. They’ve been interested on the intersection of their career and their life as fathers and mothers. I shared a blog about our daughter Jill that I posted four years ago and since many of you were not reading my blog back then I wanted to share it with you again. Why should you set goals for your career and life? Setting goals gives you a strong sense of where you want to go and  will help you: I recently read a short Success Magazine blog: Take Control of Your Dreams. The writer began with this analogy: Imagine arriving on the outskirts of a large city and being told to drive to a particular home or office there. But there are no road signs and you have no map. In fact, all you have is a very general description of the home or office, so finding it would be very much a matter of luck. Sadly, this is the way most people live their lives. As you may know, my daughter Jill teaches special education. As she explains in this guest post, growing up with me pushing her to set goals was a bit of a challenge. On the other hand, she is doing what she set as a life goal many years ago. When I was growing up my father made me set goals every year and write them down. (He also made me write book reports during the summer). He spent what then seemed like countless hours lecturing me on the importance of setting goals in my life. He always said it is important to be aiming at something you think is important. Oh, he used to drive me crazy. I felt like I was one of the young lawyers who worked for him and who he was trying to inspire to be a great lawyer. For a long time, I rejected what he was telling me. I would prove to him I could be successful without writing down goals. I never realized what an impact he had on me until a few years ago. While looking through some old papers I found a list of lifetime goals I had written in high school. (I never told my father I had actually written down goals as he had suggested.) I had not thought about these written goals in many years. When I looked, I saw that my number one lifetime goal was to become a special education teacher. I had achieved my number one goal! I was excited when I found I had actually done what I had set out to do years before! My father advocated coming up with goals every year and having lifetime goals. Each year, I write 10 professional goals and right beside them 10 things I want to do in my “real life”â€"life outside of school. My “real life” goals can be financial, spiritual or things to do with my family.  One of the reasons I write down my goals side by side is because, as I learned from my father, both parts of my life are equally important. As teachers, we often forget that we have lives outside of school because we spend so much time working during the school year. I think Jill’s approach is one that would also work for you. I guess that is natural for me to say since it is based on me “driving her crazy” while she was growing up. I practiced law for 37 years developing a national construction law practice representing some of the top highway and transportation construction contractors in the US.

Top 10 Toys (And Candy) At The Turn Of The (Last) Century Wheels Of Change (Plus A Giveaway!)

You know I love lists. I’m a listophile. This blog features  t a list of 500+ Things that Kids Like, Things They DON’T Like, and a list of  over 200 fun, cool and interesting words. List-o-mania! List-o-rama! The lister! (Pretend I’m talking in  Rob Schneider’s SNL “annoying office guy” voice.) Today I invited debut author Darlene Beck Jacobson to the blog to share the Top 10 Toys and Candies of the early 1900’s, the time when times, well, they were a-changin’. It was also the time during  her new middle grade novel, WHEELS OF CHANGE! (Don’t you just LOVE that cover?) TOP TEN TOYS OF 1900-1920 Other popular toys of the time  included: Baseball Cards (1900), Ping Pong (1901), Jigsaw Puzzle (1909), Snap Card Game, playing cards, marbles, checkers, chess, yo-yos, wooden tops and (of course) dolls. Let’s see, what would the top 10 toys of today be? I think Teddy Bears might still have a shot at it. Maybe Crayola crayons, too. But I bet no one back then could envision an app being the most popular toy. (An app? they might say. You mean a tiny  apple?) Now let’s devour the top tasty treats of the era! POPULAR CANDY FROM 1900-1920 Hmm, I think Hershey would still rank pretty high today. But my kids love Sour Patch and Fun Dip and AirHeads and all kinds of gross things now. Give me a Hershey’s any day (although make it a Cookies-n-Cream bar). Last night was back-to-school night at my daughter’s elementary, and I’m astounded every year when the principal says, “Our children will be working in fields  that haven’t  even been invented yet.” That’s how fast things are moving. I’m sure in another hundred years the top toys  will be time machines and molecular transporters that will bring the catchphrase “Beam me up, Scotty” back in style. Today’s  world is moving fast, and that tempo  is paralleled in WHEELS OF CHANGE with racial intolerance, social change and sweeping progress. It is a turbulent time growing up in 1908. For twelve year old EMILY SOPER, life in Papa’s carriage barn is magic. Emily is more at homehearing the symphony of the blacksmith’s hammer, than trying to conform to the proper expectations of females. Many prominent people own Papa’s carriages. He receives an order to make one for President Theodore Roosevelt. Papa’s livelihood becomes threatened by racist neighbors, and horsepower of a different sort. Emily is determined to save Papa’s business even if she has to go all the way to the President. Sounds exciting, right? IT IS! And guess what, you have yet another chance to win another book! Leave a comment stating what YOU think the #1 toy and #1 candy is  right now, in 2014. You have until the last seconds of September 29th to enter. The winner receives WHEELS OF CHANGE. 7 Quality Questions for Rockin Resume Results

7 Quality Questions for Rockin Resume Results Accept this position LOVE it by BluLima As unexpected as it sounds, the day preceding I distributed my pamphlet with the article Jobs Suck (about how I detest profession mentors who exist to secure you your next position (employment ought to be a 4-letter word!) or fix your resume (eye roll)) , I wound up going through two hours tidying up on of my preferred customers you got it continue. Suzy (not her genuine name â€" classification, individuals!) went through 11 meetings working with me to make sense of what she needed to be the point at which she grew up. It was penetrated into her since early on that everybody has only one way, while she had a million interests she was always unable to focus on That One Thing she was assumed to do with her life. In working with me, Suzy understood that she can make a vocation being a Jackie of All Trades, needed to advance herself as a Girl Friday (cute, right?!). She was so eager to begin, yet she was stuck on only one lil' thing (state it with me): her resume! At the point when it sh owed up in my Inbox, I was stunned by the sheer exhausting/averageness of it. Where was the vivacious, amusing, spunky, dedicated, astute, sweet, do-anything lady that I've been working with for 3 months?! Here she was disclosing to me how she got elevated to supervisor of a pastry shop somewhat in light of the fact that she took in the name requests of each normal (alongside their occupations, the names of their relatives pets, their hypersensitivities!), while her resume stated, Kept up client connections Prepared every day menus. WHAT?! I gave her The Business (yet in a for the most part pleasant, life coachy way) and continued onward to work with her on having her resume mirror her wonderful self by having her pose these inquiries: Does my resume feature my abilities achievements? Does my resume feature what Im particularly skilled or competent at doing? Do I have enough quantifiable data on my resume (ie Increased pastry kitchen deals by 20% as Retail Manager or Managed a group of 25 full low maintenance representatives)? Does my resume make me stand apart from the group? Does my resume sell me? Does my resume have enough watchwords to empower it to get gotten by a web index? If not, what number of these force words would i be able to toss in there? In the event that youre having an overly intense time finding the responses to these inquiries, at that point ask only one all-devouring inquiry: If I was employing for this position, would I get the telephone and call me? Why or why not? Think about your errands achievements in a quantifiable manner, alongside the abilities you used to get it going. In the event that its absolutely disconnected to the vocation youre applying for, simply change it to ensure it features your capacities. For instance, when I chose to go after a position as an official colleague, I didnt evacuate the 2 years I spent as an effective realtor, as I was already aware it was great for future managers to see that I Received the Top Agent Award in an office of 30 for a sum of a half year, which prompted gathering the most elevated commission split in the companys history. That brief bulletpoint demonstrated that Im a determined, self-spurring, dedicated social butterfly, which are extraordinary characteristics for practically any position! On the off chance that its the plan of the resume youre stuck on, you can get (free!) formats on Google Docs Microsoft Office with a kajillion alternatives to browse. On the off chance that its the wording youre stressed over, these Resume Samples give you a huge amount of guides to pull from. On the off chance that youre worried about what you need to remember for your resume (sequential request? goals? aptitudes?), simply consider what will best offer you to your potentail boss or customers, incorporate that. The rest can be hurled. Truly. As somebody who made sure about 5 unique occupations (3 deals, 1 client care, 1 executive asst) in under 3 years, I realize how to do my absolute best, am enthusiastic about ensuring my kick-ass customers show their planned bosses their best foot, as well. So… is there an impression on your resume, my kick-ass peruser? This article initially showed up in the seventh release of my bulletin. You can peruse the entirety of my past pamphlets here. The following onell be out this coming Monday, so in the event that you wanna get it alongside some scrumptious limits, freakin complimentary gifts, promotable advancements love in your Inbox, buy in here!
